In collaboration with Belle Chemical Company, the Carver Career Center’s Graphic Design students recently designed and produced a 20-page coloring book which also includes a sticker page. The project allowed for creative student input and each student was assigned a page in the coloring book to develop the design based on the copy provided.
Titled,The Things We Make: Belle Chemical Company, the coloring book was produced to introduce the manufacturing process to elementary school-age students and to support the development of future professionals in the fields of science and design.
The students also had an opportunity to witness the final print process of the coloring book at Dunbar Printing & Graphics. The experience provided them with valuable insights into how to produce a 20-page coloring book and sticker sheet from start to finish in a simulated workplace setting. This simulation proved to be an excellent way for the students to learn about various techniques required in the designing and production process of a coloring book. The professionals at Dunbar Printing & Graphics helped the students understand the importance of attention to detail, quality control, and maintaining consistency throughout the printing process. Through this experiential learning opportunity, the students were able to witness the printing process of the coloring book, from the selection of paper to ink management and binding. They learned how to create digital designs that meet the printing company's requirements and specifications. By observing the printing specialists at work, the students gained a better understanding of the printing industry's standards and regulations.
Overall, the experience offered the students a unique opportunity to learn essential graphic design skills and techniques required to produce a successful coloring book. It also helped them strengthen their communication and teamwork skills - an essential aspect of the graphic design field.
We want to thank Belle Chemical Company, JoLena Broussard and Rachel Coffman of Coffman Collaborative for the opportunity in trusting our students with such an important project for the community. And to Dunbar Printing & Graphics for the opportunity to watch and learn the process of printing from your talented staff.
