In 2021—on Pearl Harbor Day—the West Virginia Department of Education and Common Ground Partners proudly recognized the first class of Purple Star Schools and Districts across the Mountain State. Ruffner Elementary’s autism program and Carver Career Center’s barbering & cosmetology program are teaming up this year!
Every two weeks, Carver students will visit Ruffner to help students practice haircut tolerance ✨—while also learning the skills to serve clients with sensory needs in their future careers.
On Day One, some students got haircuts 💇♂️, some wore their “superhero capes” 🦸, and one even gave his stuffed elephant a pretend trim 🐘✂️—all huge wins!
This partnership is about more than haircuts—it’s about building confidence, inclusion, and brighter futures for everyone. 🌟
At Herbert Hoover High School, teacher leaders and administrators from every school launched the brand-new KCS Instructional Playbook. This playbook has six “plays” (lessons) designed to boost student confidence, spark engagement, and get everyone involved in learning. These leaders will share the plays back at their schools on the next PL Day so all teachers can put them into action. 🙌 As the year goes on, more "plays" will be added to the playbook!
Meanwhile, our Student Support Services team met at South Charleston High School to collaborate on best practices and strategies that help ensure every KCS student has a healthy, safe, and successful education.

We’ve added a “Bus Changes” quick link at the top of the KCS website!
✅ This link will take you to a page with all AM and PM bus changes, organized by terminal.
✅ Beginning Tuesday(9/2), district-wide bus changes will ONLY be posted on this page by the KCS Transportation Department.
✅ Some schools may still share their own school-specific bus changes on Schoology, but district-wide updates will not appear on Schoology anymore.

At Kanawha County Schools, our goal is simple but powerful: every student graduates high school on time with their cohort.
That journey doesn’t just begin senior year—it starts the moment a student walks through our doors. To celebrate the big steps and the small ones, we’re launching a new weekly feature called Path to the Stage. Each week, we’ll share stories of students across KCS who are building their futures one milestone at a time.
📍 Our first spotlight takes us to Carver Career Center, where first-year students in the Carpentry program (high school juniors) kicked off with an icebreaker lesson. Using a simple tape measure, students practiced teamwork and communication—and even learned the importance of a professional handshake.
Because Career & Technical Education (CTE) is more than just mastering a trade. It’s about building the soft skills—like confidence, professionalism, and communication—that will carry students from the classroom to graduation… and beyond.
👏 Congratulations for taking this important step on your Path to the Stage!
Carver Culinary students traded in their aprons for research papers! 📚 Each student was randomly assigned a world-famous chef to study—diving into bios, career highlights, industry impact, and even some surprising fun facts.
Their teacher was so proud watching them present with confidence and connect today’s lessons to tomorrow’s culinary industry. 🙌 Who knows… maybe one day their names will be the ones future students are researching! 🔥👩🍳👨🍳
Each year the damage waiver is offered to students and parents to help mitigate the cost of damages and loss of iPads. This is completely optional coverage for the 2025-2026 school year.
The enrollment period is now open and will close on Friday, August 29th, 2025.
Attached you will find the enrollment form and cost information sheet with all relevant information. Please contact your school with any questions. Payment may be made to your child's school via cash or check.
*If you have more than one child, the first child's enrollment fee will be $40 and each additional child can be enrolled in the coverage for $30 (charges will not exceed $100 per household).
Our new KCS app makes staying connected with your child’s school easier than ever! Here are a few quick tips to get the most out of it:
1️⃣ Favorite Your Student’s School – Make sure your child’s school is marked as a favorite so you can access it quickly. You can favorite multiple schools so you can easily flip back and forth between multiple schools.
2️⃣ Set the Default School – Change your default school so when you open the app, your child’s school appears first instead of the district page.
3️⃣ Explore the Menu – Find important info like documents, lunch menus, the school calendar, and the online attendance excuse form—all in one place!

Welcome Carver CTC Students!
We’re excited to welcome you back to Carver! Here's everything you need to know as we begin the school year.
Important Dates:
Friday, August 15
No morning classes.
All students must report to their home feeder school in the morning to complete required paperwork.
PM and all-day students will attend Carver from 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM.
Sissonville and St. Albans students will remain at their home school all day.
Monday, August 18
All students report to Carver at your regularly scheduled time.
Class Times:
Morning Session: 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM
Afternoon Session: 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM
Transportation & Drop-Off Info:
If you're dropping off or picking up a student, please do not block the bus lane in front of the building.
Student Drivers:
Parking permits will be available for seniors only at the beginning of the year.
Once we evaluate availability, we may open up permits for underclassmen.
Permits are $25 (cash only) and require:
Completed parking permit form
Copy of driver’s license
Proof of insurance
Current vehicle registration
Morning-only students should not drive unless you're attending Carver all day.
Parking forms will be distributed on the first day or can be picked up in the main office.
🚫 No parking without a permit.
Missed your bus?
Report it to your home school administration and notify Carver staff upon arrival. This should not become a habit and will not be tolerated.
Being on time is part of the Simulated Workplace Program (SWP)—a key skill we expect you to develop.
Dress Code & Uniforms:
Teachers will inform you of any program-specific dress requirements.
If you need help purchasing required clothing, please speak with your instructor or our school counselor.
No hats allowed in hallways. Instructors will let you know if hats are permitted in class.
Phones & Electronic Devices:
We follow the Kanawha County Schools (KCS) policy on electronic devices.
All personal devices (phones, earbuds, smartwatches, etc.) must be stored in the designated location provided by your instructor during class.
Meals:
Grab-and-go breakfast is available daily.
Boxed lunches can be provided—please let your teacher know in advance.
KCS allows one breakfast and one lunch per student per day.
If you eat a meal at your home school, you cannot eat the same meal again at Carver.
You will receive a bill for duplicate meals.
🍽️ No meals will be served on Friday, August 15, as classes begin after lunchtime.
